I designed this cover for Les Belles Lettres on the occasion of the publication of a book devoted to The Gallic War, an episode long regarded as the founding moment of “our” national history.
For centuries, Julius Caesar’s account remained the principal, sometimes the only, source for this conquest, shaping enduring perceptions of Gaul and its incorporation into the Roman world.
Over recent decades, however, advances in archaeological research have profoundly renewed our understanding of this period. They have brought to light new information on the true condition of the conquered territories, on the major sites of the conflict, and on the political, economic, and cultural consequences of the war. The narrative can therefore no longer be approached as it was at the beginning of the twentieth century; it calls for a critical, informed reading, one attentive to silences as much as to assertions in the ancient sources.
The book thus revisits a subject long considered familiar, yet one that still contains many areas of uncertainty and potential discovery. It places the conquest of Gaul within its Roman political context, marked by fierce struggles for power, in which military conflict was accompanied by a genuine war of words. It also outlines the current state of knowledge regarding so-called “long-haired Gaul,” a land of which a significant part was already integrated into Rome’s political and economic orbit before the legions advanced.
Finally, it offers an overview of the material traces left by the conflict, from Gergovia to Alesia, from Uxellodunum to other sites discovered more recently, demonstrating how archaeology continues to transform our understanding of this foundational episode.
The cover I conceived seeks to translate visually this contemporary reassessment: poised between inherited narrative, critical perspective, and the contributions of modern research, it accompanies the book’s scholarly ambition while inviting readers to rediscover a past they thought they knew.
