Design of the cover of the new book event "Pythagoras" by Christoph Riedweg published by Les Belles Lettres / 2023
Pythagoras haunts the contemporary imagination, but is not much more than a name associated with mathematical discoveries. Yet, for the ancients, Pythagoras was one of the most important sages. He is even said to have invented the word "philosophy". In this precise and accessible study, Christoph Riedweg traces the possible contours of this figure surrounded by legends and stories accumulated throughout antiquity.
In this way, he identifies the probable traits of his personality, the components of his thought as well as that of his successors, and paints a portrait of the sect he founded in southern Italy in the last third of the sixth century BC. From the philosophical approach combined with history and sociology, it results a possible description of Pythagoras' life, his teaching, but also of his posterity up to our days.
